Chandalika is the story of Prokrithi, an untouchable girl who is shunned by other villagers because of her caste. Her life finds a meaning when a disciple of Buddha asks her for water.
Chandalika was written in 1933 by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as part of his campaign against caste prejudice in India. It was the first of his three dance-dramas, a unique art form expressing his poetic dialogue through songs and the dance form he created.
